Paris St Germain opened the defence of their title with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Montpelier on the opening day of the season. Striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic said a few weeks ago that he believed that the club was in the best possible shape to retain the title. PSG won the title for the first time in 19 years, while they also qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions league. It was heavily rumoured that the striker would be sold after the arrival of Edinson Cavani from Napoli. Ibrahimovic, though, has dismissed the speculation by saying that he will stay at the French capital.

Ibrahimovic saw his team get the Trophee des Champions after closely fought 2-1 win over Bordeaux. After the encounter, the Swedish striker said that the team is looking very strong indeed ahead of the new season. Unlike last season, PSG have to contend with the threat from Monaco, who have also been spending big in the hope of becoming one of the best teams in Europe. They have brought the likes of James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao. Previous favourites for the title like Marseille are not expected to challenge PSG and Monaco with the huge financial backing behind them.

“This is the first trophy of the season, the team is very happy. We are a strong team with some fantastic players. We just need to make sure we win by training hard and working as a team. I think we are very strong,” said the striker. Ibrahimovic was one of the main reasons for PSG winning the title last season. The Swedish international scored more than 30 goals for the club last season. The arrival of Cavani, though, is expected to slightly modify his role within the team. Cavani, though, has played out on the wings in the past.
